On January 23, the Lviv City Museum hosted a public discussion "Mariupol Beyond the Walls," dedicated to the transformation of Mariupol's museum and cultural work after 2022 — amid war and loss of physical spaces. The speakers of the event were Mariupol Museum Director Maria Slyota and Cultural Manager Alevtina Shvetsova.
They talked about the experience of the Mariupol Museum and the activities of the Mariupol creative team "City of Mary", which, after the destruction of the city, continues to work in conditions of forced evacuation, focusing on preserving the cultural heritage and memory of the community.
Maria Slyota emphasized:
"We lost the building and the funds, but we did not lose our responsibility for the history of the city. Today, the museum is about people, memory, and the recording of what can still be preserved."
After 2022, the museum team and the "City of Mary" focused on intangible heritage - oral histories, digital archives, visual and textual evidence. The museum's work is being resumed through new formats: exhibitions in partner spaces, intercity projects, public events and publications.
During the lecture, key initiatives were presented — in particular, the exhibition of Nadazov Easter eggs "Ikanycha", the Arkhip Kuindzhi Memorial, cooperation with the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, as well as work on a catalog of the collections of the Mariupol Museum as a tool for recording losses and the basis for further activities.
